The 1997 Canadian Proof Silver Dollar celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Canada/USSR Hockey Series of 1972. Together, the Canadians and Soviets made hockey history and gave the world some of the best hockey it had ever seen.

The reverse, designed by Canadian artist Walter Burden, was inspired by a painting of Andre L'Archeveque, which belongs to the "Great Moments in Canadian Sport" owned by London Life. The picture commemorates the climactic goal of the series' eighth and final game. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
