To perch on a moss-covered boulder in the heart of the woods, lean against the broad trunk of a towering sugar maple, and gaze up at the green vault above: this is to experience the Canadian forest at its finest. In a land dominated by vast woodlands, it’s no surprise that the Canadian maple tree is considered a national treasure, symbol of a people and a beautiful and important resource.

Design
Canadian artist Emily Damstra presents the magnificent classic Canadian maple from the novel perspective of being at the bottom of the tree. Looking up past the massive gnarled trunk, thick branches reach upward and outward, making the canopy appear distant against the sky. The textural and tonal design of the trunk, branches and leaves help reinforce the image’s sense of height and depth.

The tree fills the entire reverse, also engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2013” and the face value of “20 DOLLARS.”
