The National Ballet of Canada was established in 1951 by English dancer Celia Franca, one of the principal dancers in the company's opening performance of Les Sylphides, a classic ballet captured in this elegant coin design by renowned artist Scott McKowen. In 1970, the National Ballet of Canada achieved international acclaim as the only classical ballet company to be invited to perform at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan. For over thirty years, the company has performed to thunderous applause around the world. The National Ballet of Canada has been home to some of the most accomplished talents in dance, notably two all-Canadian treasures - world-renowned choreographer James Kudelka and internationally celebrated Karen Kain, the company's principal dancer for 28 years.
