2005 $5 Saskatchewan Centennial - Pure Silver Coin

In 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint issued two different special $5 coins to mark the 100th anniversaries of Alberta and Saskatchewan joining Confederation in 1905.  (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec had formed the Dominion of Canada in 1867.)  This is the Saskatchewan coin.  It is double struck frosted proof quality, the absolute best produced by the Royal Canadian Mint.  Mintage is limited to 20,000. HST/GST exempt.

The Design:

This coin depicts a meadowlark standing on a fencepost festooned with barbed wire, with the prairie in the background. Sprigs of wheat, railroad tracks, the ubiquitous grain elevator and summer thunderclouds complete the picture.
