The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to present the 1998 proof set of Canadian coinage. This is the only set available that features both the Commemorative Silver Dollar and the aureate dollar depicting the common loon. This year's elegant book-style packaging, with removable lens, splendidly complements these fine coins and establishes a new image of the Royal Canadian Mint.

This year the proof Silver Dollar, designed by artist Adeline Halvorson, commemorates the 125th anniversary of the founding of the North-West Mounted Police. At the time of confederation in 1867, Canada consisted of only four eastern provinces.

In 1870, the government acquired a huge expanse of land from the Hudson's Bay Company. Plans to open the region to settlement required the suppression of the whiskey trade and the establishment of peaceful relations with the Native peoples.

In May 1873, the North-West Mounted Police was created to bring law, order and Canadian authority to the western frontier. The reverse of the coin features a mounted member of that early force which, in 1920, was transformed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
